Secretariat started his 3-year-old season aiming at the Triple Crown. Secretariat won all the qualifying races for the Derby. Except for 1. The Wood Memorial, in which he finished 3rd.It was later learned that Secretariat had an abscess in his mouth, causing him pain when he ran. The Derby was now uncertain. Secretariat got a break, giving his abscess time to heal. With time, he was healed and ready for the Derby.

Secretariat was entered in the Kentucky Derby. His racing number was 1A. He won the race, and placed a new track record for the fastest Derby yet. His record still stands today.

Secretariat was now heading to the Preakness, the second jewel in the Triple Crown. This race was held at Pimlico Racetrack, in Baltimore Maryland.
Secretariat went to win the race, and set yet another track record for the fastest Preakness yet.

Now, all Secretariat had left was the Belmont. This was the longest of the races, and Secretariat was ready. He ended up winning the race. By 31 lengths. A length is the term of measurement races use to measure how much horses won by.
It is simply the length of the average horse.

Secretariat has won the Triple Crown. He was the 9th horse to concur all three races.
