Secretariat started racing in 1942, as a 2-year-old. He placed a disappointing fourth in his first race. The Meadow, owned by Penny's father, was greatly in debt. It needed money, and Secretariat was the only way to get it. He was the only horse they had racing for them at the time. However, after his lose in his first race, he then went to win 5 in a row. Many people offered Penny lots of money for Secretariat, but Penny turned them all down, knowing the Secretariat could do a lot more than he was at the time.
